A Cry in the Dark by Jessica R。 Patch follows FBI special agent Violet Rainwater who was introduced in Her Darkest Secret where a special FBI group investigated the Nursery Rhyme Killer。 This time the group heads to Kentucky deep in Night Hollow or the Holler as the locals call it。 They are investigating The Blind Eye Killer or BEK because he takes the eyeballs out of his victims (women) & sews their eyes shut。 As the team investigates they keep running into the ol' same problem。 No one wants to A Cry in the Dark by Jessica R。 Patch follows FBI special agent Violet Rainwater who was introduced in Her Darkest Secret where a special FBI group investigated the Nursery Rhyme Killer。 This time the group heads to Kentucky deep in Night Hollow or the Holler as the locals call it。 They are investigating The Blind Eye Killer or BEK because he takes the eyeballs out of his victims (women) & sews their eyes shut。 As the team investigates they keep running into the ol' same problem。 No one wants to talk because the Holler takes care of its own & they insist "they" will figure the killer and take care of them。 Along for the ride, is Detective John Orlando。 He thinks this case is connected to his wife's murder a few years。 Both Violet and John are searching for something as they investigate the BEK。 She's looking for her "father," who abducted her mom and several women years ago and made them have his babies。 She's always on the search。 She won't give up until she finds him like John won't give up until he uncovers who murdered his wife。 As they work together, John starts to see something in Violet that he never thought he'd have again。 Violet also starts to slowly thaw that ice around her heart and feelings start creeping in。 Will the agents crack the case in time before other girls get murdered? It's a crazy mad creepy twisted whodunit that you won't want to miss (just make sure you read it during the daytime)。 I really enjoyed this book。 If you love true crime like I do then you will definitely love this book too。 Jessica R Patch can really look into sick twisted characters and wrap them up in beautiful storylines that will leave you feeling hope and redemption。 As with most Love Inspired Suspense, you know they are faith based。 But unlike other Love Inspired Suspense books her stories tend to really explore the darkest recesses of the mind。 I like how this is like a true crime story with a happy ending and God's love shining through。 We don't usually get that in real true crime。 I'm looking forward to reading about the other team members。 I can't wait to find out who's next。 I was given a copy of this book, but all opinions are my own。 。。。more

A Cry in the Dark by Jessica R。 Patch is a very highly recommended mystery/thriller。 This is an excellent novel!FBI special agent Violet Rainwater is a forensic psychologist and an agent with the Strange Crimes Unit, Southern Division。 She is called to the Appalachian Mountain town of Night Holler in Kentucky to investigate the murder of three young women whose bodies were found in a cave。 Their deaths are obviously due to a serial killer, especially considering the gruesome detail that they are A Cry in the Dark by Jessica R。 Patch is a very highly recommended mystery/thriller。 This is an excellent novel!FBI special agent Violet Rainwater is a forensic psychologist and an agent with the Strange Crimes Unit, Southern Division。 She is called to the Appalachian Mountain town of Night Holler in Kentucky to investigate the murder of three young women whose bodies were found in a cave。 Their deaths are obviously due to a serial killer, especially considering the gruesome detail that they are all missing their eyes and their eyelids were sown shut。 Detective John Orlando joins the team to assist because he thinks the case might be related to the murder of his wife several years earlier。Violet is a sympathetic and fully realized character。 She had a tragic childhood due to the appalling circumstances that led to her mother giving birth to her。 Her mother has never allowed her to forget why she was born and has treated her terribly her whole life。 Once Violet was in a position to find her contemptible father, who abducted her mother when she was fifteen, she started trying to find him along with half-siblings。 She has suffered her whole life, never feeling loved or wanted。The writing is absolutely excellent in the plot, execution, and development。 The case is completely compelling and the narrative will hold your attention throughout。 As the investigation unfolds and new clues are uncovered, there are several suspects that will come to the forefront。 Follow the clues and expect plenty of twists along with new information。 There is an ominous, creepy atmosphere throughout the novel, but there is also a wonderful corresponding spiritual message of personal redemption, surrender, healing, and love。The first book in this series following the Strange Crimes Unit is Her Darkest Secret that follows agents Fiona Kelly and Asa Kodiak。 You don't have to read it first, but you will absolutely want to read it after reading A Cry in the Dark。Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Harlequin via Edelweiss。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2023/0。。。 。。。more

Pam,
What a roller coaster ride of a book! I was immediately drawn in to the story as our heroine, Violet, heads to the hills of Kentucky to investigate a serial killer。 She’s a member of a special FBI unit that investigates these crimes。 I really liked our hero, Detective John Orlando, who comes to the “holler” to join the team because his wife was killed in a similar way as the 3 bodies that are reported found in a cave。 It’s a creepy novel, but there’s a element of hope that runs through the story What a roller coaster ride of a book! Tammy Lunsford,
FBI Special Agent Violet Rainwater has fought her own personal demons for all of her life。 She is completely consumed with finding her father (or rather her sperm donor)。 Her mother was savagely used and abused by this man in what her mother describes as the baby basement。 It has served her well in her capacity with hunting serial killers because of her obsessive personality, but she also feels an imagined darkness in her soul。 Her mother convinced her from an early age that she was her "father' FBI Special Agent Violet Rainwater has fought her own personal demons for all of her life。 She is completely consumed with finding her father (or rather her sperm donor)。 Her mother was savagely used and abused by this man in what her mother describes as the baby basement。 It has served her well in her capacity with hunting serial killers because of her obsessive personality, but she also feels an imagined darkness in her soul。 Her mother convinced her from an early age that she was her "father's child", and this has caused Violet to feel that she has a monster lying dormant within her just waiting to be unleashed into the world。 She has never felt the love of a mother or anyone for that matter。 "And in the meantime, Violet had been used as punching bag for the pain, riddled with lies, and it would take powerful truths to untangle and dissolve that and free her。"When her team is called to the small town/community of Night Holler, Kentucky to help find and arrest a vicious killer known as the Blind Eye Killer, they find that things are not always as they appear。 This depraved individual removes his victims' eyes and sews their eyelids shut all while they are still alive (shivers)! The team immediately feels the oppressive darkness devouring this small community。 They also soon learn that there are a lot of wolves in sheep's clothing。 Are the police and residents of this small community complicit or scared? Team member John Orlando lost his wife, Callie, in an undercover operation in this area。 Her body was found in the same condition as these poor women are being disposed of now。 He needs some closure。 I love this character。 He was such a cheerleader for Violet。 There is a little romance brewing just beneath the surface。 One of my favorite characters is Tiberius (Ty)。 He helps break up the depressing side of their job with his silliness and songs。 I also felt such pity and empathy for Violet。 No child should be treated the way she has been treated, but I love her strong personality and tenacity。 She is an intimidating force to be reckoned with。 This was a great, and I do mean great suspense-filled, creepy mystery which will take you into the mind of a depraved and disturbed individual。 Jessica Patch is making a name for herself as a scream queen with her dark, suspenseful stories。 However, she also shows that light can dispel the darkness。 We only have to believe and have faith while allowing that light, rather than the dark, to consume us。 It is definitely something you will want to read in the daylight hours。 Just when I think Jessica Patch cannot top her last hit, she hits the mark again。 If you are a Criminal Minds fan, you will devour this book。 I will caution you that once you start the book, you will not get anything else done because you will be so captivated by this story that you will have to finish it。Thank you to Harlequin, the author and NetGalley for this ARC。 I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

Christine,
So, I knew going in that this book had the potential to be creepier than I would prefer, and to be honest, I almost stopped reading a couple chapters in, but I am so glad that I stuck with it。 This was a complex mystery that had me constantly changing my mind about who the guilty party was。 Violet and John were an excellent pair, and I was rooting for them。 I’m looking forward to Ty’s story。I received a copy from the publisher。 All opinions are my own。
